Syllable Counter

Count syllables in words or full text with a per-word breakdown and average syllables per word.

How it works

This tool estimates the syllable count of English words using a rule-based algorithm. It identifies vowel groups (a, e, i, o, u, y) and applies common English pronunciation rules such as silent-e removal and handling of suffixes like -es and -ed.

  • Vowel grouping: consecutive vowels are counted as a single syllable (e.g., "rain" has one vowel group = 1 syllable).
  • Silent-e rule: a trailing "e" preceded by a consonant is typically silent and not counted (e.g., "make" = 1 syllable, not 2).
  • Short words: words with three or fewer letters are always counted as one syllable.
  • Per-word breakdown: the table shows the syllable count for each word along with a visual dot indicator, making it easy to spot longer words.
  • Average metric: the average syllables per word is useful for assessing text complexity. Simple prose averages around 1.3, while academic text is often above 1.7.
